Hi, I’m Dr. Jimmy Turner
- Halving your interest rate could save you five or six figures over the life of your loan.
- A Fulfilled Physician lives life on their terms and wakes up every day living the dream and enjoying the journey.
- He shares the common mistakes people make, including the six-figure mistakes he has made (I’ve made some, too), and helps you avoid them yourself.
- However, in general, Galen and the ancient Greek medical tradition continued to be studied and followed in the Eastern Roman Empire, commonly known as the Byzantine Empire.
- Whether you’re a physician in the midst of burnout and overwhelm, trying to balance your responsibilities as a partner, parent, and physician.
Yet, the relationship between these two fields is more intertwined than one might initially think. What I’m proposing is that philosophy can actually benefit your mental health and promoting well-being. Although the main focus of his work was on medicine, anatomy, and physiology, Galen also wrote about logic and philosophy. His writings were influenced by earlier Greek and Roman thinkers, including Plato, Aristotle, the Stoics, and the Pyrrhonists. Galen was concerned to combine philosophical thought with medical practice, as in his brief work That the Best Physician is also a Philosopher he took aspects from each group and combined them with his original thought.
The Problematic State of Medicine
In addition, I have a small equity stake in The Physician Philosopher. If this book becomes a New York Times Bestseller, we’ll both be happy campers. #103. How Much Money Should Doctors Save
The chapter on asset protection is light, and I feel this is an area that is not my strong suit. I am doing all the basic things recommended in the book, which is somewhat reassuring. If you don’t know the answers, you need to spend a little more time on this site, but the book has answers that I agree with, as well. In the residency chapter, he covers travel hacking, buying versus renting a home, car buying, and the possibility of moonlighting, which can be quite lucrative if you can find the time.
They also say it’s informative, concise, and easy to read. Cannot remember if it was recommended to me or not, but I highly recommend it to you. It is physician specific, but can be applied to any high-income earner who came out of an advanced degree (or college) with significant debt.

The subtitle says it all, “The 20% of Personal Finance Doctors Need to Know to Get 80% of the Results”. Everyone loves talking about FIRE, but not the inherent problem that FIRE creates – the Early Retirement Gap. Have you ever wanted a financial advisor’s inside perspective on fee-models? If you have a financial advisor (or if you are considering one), this post is a must-read.
Differentiating between fee-based (commission-based) and fee-only financial advisors, he advises to work “only with fee-only” advisors. They can have conflicts of their own, particularly in an assets under management (AUM) model, but not to the extent of a fee-based advisor who may earn commissions on loaded (expensive) mutual funds and inappropriate life insurance products. Every chapter ends with a handful of bullet points to reinforce what you’ve read and learned. Read it, implement what you’ve learned, and you’ll be well on your way to eventual financial independence.
Though incorrect in his studies of human reproduction and reproductive anatomy, he came very close to identifying the ovaries as analogous to the male testes. Reproduction was a controversial topic in Galen’s lifetime, as there was much debate over if the male was solely responsible for the seed, or if the woman was also responsible. The 11th-century Suda lexicon states that Galen died at the age of 70, which would place his death in about the year 199. However, there is a reference in Galen’s treatise “On Theriac to Piso” (which may, however, be spurious) to events of 204. There are also statements in Arabic sources[43] that he died in Sicily at age 87, after 17 years studying medicine and 70 practicing it, which would mean he died about 216. According to these sources, the tomb of Galenus in Palermo was still well preserved in the tenth century.
Chapter 9 is devoted to the mantra to “live like a resident” for the first few years after residency. Sense-making is a crucial process for individuals recovering from hardships, as it involves reflecting on and interpreting challenging experiences to integrate them into one’s personal narrative. This process helps create a coherent story that connects past events with current identity, fostering a greater sense of purpose and self-awareness. Positive reframing, such as focusing on gratitude, allows individuals to acknowledge the growth and resilience gained from their struggles, rather than merely dwelling on the difficulties. This approach enhances resilience, providing coping mechanisms like positive self-talk, social support, and self-care, which better equip individuals to handle future challenges.

The process of reflecting on one’s experiences, a key aspect of practical philosophy, is crucial for mental health. Reflective practices enable individuals to gain insight into their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors, facilitating personal growth and emotional regulation. This reflective capacity is linked to mindfulness practices, which have been shown to reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression (Kabat-Zinn, 2003). This trend of studies among Hindu physicians began in the 17th century and lasted until the early 20th century (Speziale 2018).
