God willing, CIR will continue to expand in our diocese as we share both our struggles and victories with each other. Please keep this ministry in your daily prayers and share this article as the Holy Spirit may prompt. Recovery volunteers have gotten the program off the ground and gracious facilitieshave offered meeting rooms. Each meeting rotates a chairperson, and a three-page reflection on the Sunday readings guides our recovery discussion. Through a series of blessings, Fort Wayne started its first CIR meeting in September of 2022.
Nicaragua Escalates Repression Against Catholic Clergy
The catechism notes that discontinuing medical procedures that are “burdensome, dangerous, extraordinary, or disproportionate to the expected outcome” and allowing a patient to die naturally can be legitimate. But Church leaders have stressed over the years that basic food and water are not extraordinary forms of care. The Catholic Church teaches that human life must be protected from conception alcohol consumption and risk of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease until death and says in No. 2277 of the catechism that it is immoral to take actions to hasten a person’s death, even if the person does not appear to have a good quality of life. Cathy, Margo’s mother, said in the July 7 video that Margo had told her and Mike before her accident that she was “very clear” that she “would not want to be kept alive by machines” if she were ever incapacitated.

Before she moved into a maternity home, Meryem Bakache considered an abortion. He deserves a married couple who has their life together,” she said. The number of domestic infant adoptions has fallen sharply since the 1970s. When denied an abortion, women in one study overwhelmingly chose parenthood (91%) over adoption (9%), according to a 2016 analysis from researchers at the University of California San Francisco. In 2005, she died of starvation after her husband insisted he was complying with her wishes by removing her feeding tube, despite a protracted and very public court battle and the pleading of her family. “Because the Eucharist represents and is the victory over the evil that the church still struggles to contend with. That evil has already been beaten by our Lord.”
What does the Catholic Church teach about withdrawing food and water?
If anything you’ve read resonates with you, know that you are not alone. CIR offers a place to feel connected without judgment or expectation, connected to a new and indescribable hope. There are now maternity homes that specialize in keeping children out of the foster care system.
Most people who get to experience sobriety from their addiction find themselves interested in the surprising nature of events that take place when they are present for their own lives and the people around them. Each day, well lived, can produce opportunities for growth and getting to know more about yourself and your Creator. You may find some difficulties facing the realities that you were previously hiding from, but the fruit of that comes in the form of being able to hold your head high and look yourself and others in the eye knowing that you’ve done your best today. The goal of every encounter and interaction that one has with our organization is connection—connections with others who have struggled or still struggle from a similar state of hopelessness as well as connection to Jesus Christ, the Lord that delivers new life.
- “Why wasn’t there a single breakout session that addressed the topic of child protection?” asked Chris O’Leary, a clergy sex abuse survivor from St. Louis who also found the lack of survivor programming at the congress to be “very concerning and very troubling.”
- He found it disappointing that that dynamic has not been a point of emphasis for the bishops’ eucharistic revival.
- They welcome women with multiple children, and despite their faith-based roots, have no religious requirements for residency.
- Sometimes, it’s easier to be honest with others than with myself.

This organization was started as a call from God, and He will continue to be the source of all functions and organizational development as we reach out to serve parishes, communities, and individuals across the world. “It is clear now that the report of his abuse was eclipsed by the diocese’s focus on child sexual abuse. This should not have occurred. What Fr McCafferty reported in extensive written detail, in 2003, was clearly selling prescription drugs illegally criminal. They welcome women with multiple children, and despite their faith-based roots, have no religious requirements for residency. Residents sign a covenant for “healthy living,” though Wilson says they try never to kick anyone out. The congregation, under Pope Benedict XVI, clearly affirmed that a person in a vegetative state must be supplied with food and water even if they seem to have no chance of recovery.
These are a great option for people in rural areas or where we don’t yet have in-person communities. But for recovering men and women who already have a deep relationship with Jesus Christ or the Trinity, that might be a turn-off or just unsatisfying. Catholics should have a community that encourages them to tap into the true presence of Christ. As Catholics, we have access to the healing power of God through the sacraments and the Body of Christ. We know that Christ is truly present “where two or three are gathered” in his name. The community of the Church is both the wounded Christ and the healing Christ.
For Catholics, this may sound like a familiar story because it is the story of redemption. Christ came to save those who could not save themselves – those who were helpless on their own. The person suffering from addiction passes through death and hell, but to recover, they must be resurrected by God. Speaking to that complicated picture is how different survivors react to the eucharistic revival. O’Leary, the survivor from St. Louis, said the priest who molested him did so while consecrating the Eucharist. “I think the church needs the Eucharist to heal as much as survivors do,” said Green, who added that the church “must fearlessly come to grips” with the legacy of sexual abuse. Green said her own encounters with the church “have not always been great.” “‘I feel like nothing can bring me back to the church,” said Aimee Torres, a California resident who told National Catholic Reporter that her parish priest abused her when she was a child.
In the future, you’ll be able to “pay it forward” by inviting and paying for another person to have full access to CIR+ as well. Free members have access to a limited amount of resources and features, whereas premium members have access to all resources and features for $12/month or $120/year. You can also join CIR+ for free to access and trial limited resources available on the membership website. Start every single day by prayerfully reading a reflection from a fellow CIR member that relates to the day’s Mass readings and includes questions to prompt deeper engagement—all through a recovery perspective. As a CIR+ member, you can find these in “Daily Reflection” or sign up to have these reflections sent to your inbox every day.
